Blending Processes and USP
Hanshy's blending process is a key factor in the company's success. Although single-estate teas are available, most of the teas sold in bags and other teas sold in the West are blends. The aim of blending is to obtain better taste, a higher price, or both. Some teas are not pure varieties but have been enhanced through special processing. Tea is highly receptive to the inclusion of various aromas, which allows for the design of an almost endless range of scented and flavoured varieties.
Selection of base teas
The first step in blending tea is to select the base teas that will be used. These teas are chosen based on their taste, aroma, and appearance, and are often sourced from multiple regions to achieve a desired flavour profile.
Tasting and blending
Once the base teas have been selected, they are tasted and blended in various combinations to create a final blend that has the desired taste and aroma. This process involves a great deal of experimentation and skill, as different teas can have very different flavours and need to be balanced carefully to create a harmonious blend.
Flavouring and scenting
Depending on the desired final product, additional flavours may be added to the blend. For example, some teas may be scented with jasmine or rose petals, while others may be flavoured with natural flavours.
Quality control
Throughout the blending process, strict quality control measures are taken to ensure that the tea meets the desired standards for taste, aroma, and appearance. This may involve testing the tea for chemical composition, as well as conducting taste tests to ensure that the final blend is consistent and of high quality.
Packaging
Once the tea has been blended and quality control measures have been taken, it is packaged for sale. This may involve packaging the tea in bags, loose leaf form, or other forms depending on the intended market.
